Mohansic Golf League |
2019 SEASON |
MGL—Home |
The Mohansic Golf League was known as the Peekskill Golf League from 1948 through 1999. It was formally changed to the M.G.L. in 2000. Year 2012 is our 64th consecutive year of play. The league has four divisions, A, B, C, and D with a total of 48 players. Each year, players are sorted numerically by their prior year average. The first 12 become A’s, the next 12 become B’s, the 3rd 12 become C’s, and the 4th become D’s. Of each group, two-person teams are basically determined by teaming 1 with 12, 2 with 11, 3 with 10, and so on. This coincidentally leads to pretty even teams within each division, subject to variances due to new players and to improving or declining performance. As such, handicaps are not used within weekly matches. Each week, two-person teams in each division play against each other. Three rounds are played during the season. Matches are determined on a 4-point basis. In each match, match play accounts for 3 points (1 for 1st half, 1 for 2nd half, and 1 for total game). The last point is determined by aggregate score. Thus, players are never encouraged to “drop out of a hole,” as it will hurt their team’s aggregate and ultimately their own average. The Rules of Golf are religiously followed subject to minor local variations. There are no “gimmies,” “Mulligans,” “two-shot first hole,” or whatever. A “team” consists of two A’s, two B’s, two C’s and two D’s. Each team’s divisions can each win 4 points per week. Combining a team’s divisions, a single team can win up to 16 points in one week. It takes more than 8 for that team to win the match. At the end of the year, recognition is given for the top 8-player team, the top two-player team in each division, the top low gross player in the league, and occasionally, the top low gross player in each division. Mohansic Golf League holds a tournament remotely in early September each year. It consists of two days of golf and is handicap based. The mornings consist of tournament play for low net scores. The afternoons consist of a fun scramble or other 9 hole game, with special prizes for winning team, closest to pin on par 3’s, etc. MGL’s format fosters a true respect for the game of golf. |
The MGL has improved each year by bringing in lower handicap players when vacancies occur. The MGL pays $100 each week to Westchester County to secure our 15 weekly tee times. That amounts to $1900 each season, including “open” and match play tournament weeks. |
